I'm Justis Mills, an editor in the AI safety and rationality communities. I've edited for LessWrong, The Centre for Effective Altruism, AI Impacts, Redwood Research, and many other organizations.
I provide all levels of editing on request, from basic copyediting to substantive feedback on ideas. My main advantage over other editors is an understanding of both AI safety content and a wide range of rational discourse norms. So while other professional editors might make mistakes like:
- Remove load-bearing hedging for deliberately low-confidence claims
- Miss typos in technical terms or abbreviations
- Suggest clarity tweaks that subtly change meanings
I avoid these pitfalls. Conversely, few people who understand AI topics in depth are very skilled editors.
My rate is $100/hr. You can also get my feedback on LessWrong posts for free, if you have at least 100 LessWrong karma, using the "Request Feedback" button in the post editor interface. Please only use this service for things you actually intend to post (crossposting counts) on LessWrong.
Papers
In addition to hundreds of posts on LessWrong, I've edited many academic papers. I don't require attribution. However, here are examples of papers that do acknowledge my feedback, and their first authors:
- AI Control: Improving Safety Despite Intentional Subversion - Ryan Greenblatt
- An Overview of Catastrophic AI Risks - Dan Hendrycks
- Steering Language Models with Activation Engineering - Alexander Turner
I have also edited op eds, book manuscripts, and other types of writing.
Testimonials
"Justis always has excellent feedback and suggestions on my writing, not only in style and readability, but also through helping me understand, clarify, and improve my arguments and exposition."
"In addition to being a good writer, Justis has a deep enough understanding of rationality, AI Safety, STEM and programming concepts that he can suggest better analogies, improve explanations and point out substantial flaws or errors for most things I write about. This makes his feedback a lot more valuable than that of other editors."
"It's rare to find an editor who has the attention to detail to spot all your grammatical mistakes, while also the keen wit to give useful feedback on the substance of your writing. Justis has both. He was also great at responding to fast turnaround times and tight deadlines."
"Working with Justis was smooth, and he provided useful edits and suggestions."
